Features

St Mary and Michael’s Catholic Church is a large Gothic-style church in New Ross County Wexford.

The large imposing church may make an ideal filming location for scenes that need a striking religious backdrop. The early 20th century church is of a flamboyant Gothic Revival style and full of embelishment and architectural detail. All of which gives it a striking and dazzling appearance, both inside and out.

The two-toned exterior is more speckled and random than the facades of most Gothic-style churches of the period. This gives the exterior a sort of subtle polychrome effect that makes the exterior feel bold and stark. The interior has lots of detailing and design that leave almost no area of the church bare or flat. Even the ceiling has dark wooden rafters crisscossing it. Statues and murals decorate the church inside and out. The altarpiece, with a carved flèche, is particularly extravagant. The church also has some impressive stained glass scenes.

Started in 1894 and finished in 1905. The architect was Walter Glynn Doolin, who was a Dublin-born architect who favoured the Gothic Revival style.

A choir gallery at the rear of the church holds a moderately large, timber panelled Gothic-style pipe organ.
