Johnstown Castle Grounds
Features
Johnstown Castle Grounds is the estate of Johnstown Castle, near Wexford town, County Wexford, Ireland.
The sprawling estate may be an ideal filming location for scenes set in lavish gardens or on country estates. The romantic garden will especially suit scenes set in the past. The estate’s 19th century history is reflected in the features like the walled garden, the hothouses, several statues, the follies, and even the man made lake. Embellishing the gardens are a variety of aged trees, flower beds, fountains, and lakeside walks. The layout of the grounds centre around the man-made lakes. One of these lakes is the largest fresh-water lake in County Wexford.
The grounds were largely designed by famous Victorian garden designer Daniel Robertson for the Grogan family. Work is currently underway to restore the walled gardens and hothouses to their condition in the mid 1800s.
One of the more interesting follies in the location is an unusual fishing tower. Separate from the main house is the agricultural museum and a cafe can also be found in the location. Peacocks roam the gardens and are considered friendly to visitors. Visitors can buy bags of feed for the birds from the visitor’s centre.
